Stylist Brad Lepper of Auckland’s French Revolver Studio says:

1. Go for a... layered haircut with framing around the face to give you more texture and movement and allow volume to be created.

2. Invest in... curling tongs with a medium-sized barrel and try this technique for any length of hair: Take vertical sections of hair, curling one section forward and then the next section back, always directing hair towards the nose of the tongs. Then spritz a light hairspray onto your hands and squeeze into the curl. Shake out to achieve a looser result. Never brush a curl!

3. Or why not try... creating a curl with your straightening irons? Use them in the same motion as you do scissors when curling a ribbon. You’ll get a softer and more natural result.

4. Get root lift... by blow-drying hair upside down on a hot setting and then on a cold.

5. Revive next day hair... by using the blow-dryer on a cold setting and some Sebastian Thickefy Foam $40 to reactivate your style and smooth out any wayward frizz.

6. Fake it... with colour. The balayage freehand colouring technique is a great way to create movement and separation in a hairstyle.
